One thing that’s always impressed me about these old fight scenes is the inherent rhythm of the choreography. Check out this scene from 1979’s Monkey Kung Fu (a.k.a Stroke of Death). It’s not a particularly great movie or anything but that fighting cadence is on full display here. Each of the characters performs their own moves in time with everyone else. It almost looks like they’re dancing, especially when the characters do their flourishes in between actual hits. As an audience member you just get dragged into the flow of the scene, and as the pace picks up the excitement naturally rises along with it. Sadly there aren’t enough movies that have this style of action nowadays.
