First Chinese Cartoonist – Wu Youru


When you’re talking about a medium as fluid as comics, it’s rarely easy to talk about “firsts”. After all, some would peg the tradition as lieterally thousands of years old. But on his blog, Nick Stember has presented the the 19th century “newspainter” Wu Youru as the one of the earliest and most influential of China’s cartoonists. There’s not a lot known about him, but his work is interesting all the same.
