Archiving China’s Martial Arts Heritage

Okay I have to say “Kung Fu Archivist” sounds like a pretty amazing job title. Hing Chao is part of a team of scholars in Hong Kong using motion capture to preserve kung fu moves for future generations. Real masters are coming in to have their techniques digitized and turned into 3D animation data. (We’re actually using a very similar technology on Shuyan the Kung Fu Princess to bring authentic martial arts techniques directly into the game.)

So far the team has mostly focused on the Hakka techniques of southeastern China, but other major styles like Wing Chun are also in the mix. It looks like the ultimate goal is to have as comprehensive an archive as possible, as well as finding other means of preservation like getting a UNESCO Heritage designation. It’s such a great, worthwhile project.
